Caption: Oedema. Close-up of the painful and swollen legs of an elderly woman suffering from oedema. This abnormal swelling is caused by an accumulation of fluid in the body tissues. Oedema is most commonly caused by heart failure which results in blood congestion in the veins, leading to excessive fluid being forced back into the tissues. Gravity acts on the built-up fluid, causing swellings to appear in the leg and ankle regions. Treatment is with direct pressure using bandages or by raising the legs. Excess fluid can be removed by restricting dietary sodium and by the use of diuretic drugs.
