Caption: Ankle oedema. Close-up of the swollen ankle of an elderly woman patient, affected by pitting oedema. The foot appears pitted, bloated and the skin is shiny due to stretching. Surface blood vessels are evident. The raised skin surface is due to excess fluid in the tissues. This is caused by blood congestion in veins which results in more fluid being forced into the tissues. Gravity assists this process. The most common cause of oedema is heart failure. Treatment is with direct pressure using bandages or by raising the legs. Excess fluid can be removed by restricting dietary sodium and by the use of diuretic drugs.
