Caption: Oedema. Deformed and swollen foot and ankle of an 84 year-old woman suffering from oedema complicated by osteoarthritis and bunions. Oedema is an abnormal swelling due to an accumula- tion of fluid in the body tissues. In this case, it is caused by heart failure and blood congestion in the veins, leading to excessive fluid being forced back into the tissues. Gravity makes the swellings appear in the leg and ankle regions. A bunion is seen as the deformity in the joint of the big toe. Bunions, hallux valgus, iswhere the joint at the base of the big toe points outwards. Osteoarthritisis a joint disease caused by mechanical stress.
