Caption: Obesity. Gamma scan of an obese person, frontal view. The colours show different rates of uptake by different tissues of a radioactive isotope that has been introduced to the body. The presence of the isotope is detected by the gamma radiation it emits. This is normally done to examine bones, but can also be used to examine other body tissues. In obese people, the technique can be used to check blood circulation and identify areas of concern. The organs that can show increased uptake of such isotopes include (pink) the liver (upper left) and the bladder (centre), organs that remove and excrete the isotope from the body.
