Caption: Villous oedema with erosion, pill camera view. Villi are finger-like folds on the walls of the small intestine that serve to increase its surface area. Oedema occurs when fluid accumulates in a tissue, causing it to swell. This is usually due to increased local fluid secretion due to inflammation, although the cause of this is not known. Erosion is the wearing away of the intestinal lining. A pill camera is a pill-sized camera that is swallowed to image the digestive tract.
