Caption: X-ray of the human chest showing bronchopneumonia affecting most of the right lung. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria (normally Streptococcus pneumoniae). The alveoli, a network of microscopic air sacs in the lung, become filled with pus to the exclusion of air. Eventually the lung becomes solid. This type of pneumonia (broncho) starts around the bronchi & bronchioles and is the commonest form. Pneumonia occurs as a secondary disease in persons suffering from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
