Caption: Close-up of pink & grey coloured psoriasis plaques. Psoriasis is one of the commonest skin diseases, affecting 2% of Caucasians in temperate zones. It involves a ten-fold increase in the speed of epidermal cell proliferation, normally at localised sites at the elbows, forearms, knees and scalp. It is characterised by well-defined plaques, the colour of which varies from red to silver. More extreme cases can affect the whole body causing considerable disability. Drugs that are known to cure psoriasis have side effects, but palliative alternatives such as coal tar preparations tend to be cosmetically unacceptable.
