Caption: Colon polyps. Colonoscope (endoscope) view within the human colon showing two white polyp growths. This photo was taken during a polypectomy, the procedure to surgically remove polyps. The colon (pink circular ridges) is the main part of the large intestine; it absorbs water from digested food and moves faeces to the rectum. It is a site of formation of polyps: usually benign growths (adenomas) that protrude from the mucous membrane. Most polyps are connected to the lining of the colon by a short stalk. Colon polyps can become cancerous. Through a colonoscope, polyps may be removed using a diathermy snare.
