Caption: Pneumonia. Computed tomography (CT) scan showing the right lung (left of image) affected by pneumonia, an inflammation of the lungs due to infection. The infected site is visible at lower centre left as an irregular collection of yellow, red and blue patches. These are areas where fluid and pus accumulation occurs. Most cases of pneumonia are caused by viruses such as adenoviruses or respiratory syncytial viruses or bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. In this transvere section of the chest the lungs are black, the network of air passages within them pink, and the heart chambers (upper centre) yellow.
