Caption: Paronychia (infection) on big toe. View of inflam- ed and reddened skin around the big toe in a young boy. This condition is known as paronychia and is caused by a fungal or bacterial infection. The lymph vessels in the foot have also become inflamed (lymphangitis), due to the spread of bacteria from an infected wound. The skin overlying the lymph vessels becomes tender and inflamed. Paronychia is most common in people with poor foot hygiene, poor circulation or when ill- fitting shoes are worn. Treatment may involve prescribing anti-fungal or antibiotic drugs. If pus collects then it should be drained by making a small nick with a needle.
