Caption: Paget's disease. Coloured bone scan of the skeleton of a patient with Paget's disease. This scan shows the mineral density of bone, ranging from blue (least dense) through green and yellow to red (most dense). In Paget's disease the normal process of bone formation is disrupted, causing affected bones to thicken, weaken, and become deformed. The disease usually affects only limited areas of the skeleton, especially the skull, pelvis, clavicle, vertebrae and leg bones. The worst affected area in this individual are the skull, pelvis, legs and one upper arm. Paget's disease often causes no symptoms and is typically discovered by accident. The cause is unknown.
