Caption: Acute mycoplasmal pneumonia. Coloured chest X-ray showing acute mycoplasmal pneumonia in the upper lobe of a patient's lung (orange area in upper left). Mycoplasmal pneumonia is caused by the minute, bacteria-like microorganism Mycoplasma pneumoniae, one of the smallest cellular organisms known to science. It is probably the most common cause of pneumonia in healthy adults, accounting for 10-30% of all acute lower respiratory tract infections. Symptoms include fever and a cough. The condition is treated with the antibiotics tetracycline and erythromycin.
