The substantia nigra of the brain's basal ganglia region is seen here. This region controls motor function in the body. Parkinson's disease is caused by degeneration of these dopaminergic cells in the elderly. Dopamine is a nerve transmitter that relaxes muscles. Low dopamine levels cause tremor, joint rigidity & slow movement. Treatment for Parkinson's disease includes dopamine drugs. Implanting dopamine-secreting human foetal cells into this part of the brain is another treatment.
