Caption: Psoriasis. Close-up of a large red and white scaly lesion seen on the arm of a 67 year-old man caused by psoriasis. Psoriasis is a common skin disease & although not painful, extensive lesions can cause physical discomfort and social embarrassment. Lesions are caused by the overactive production of skin cells forming thick patches covered with dead and flaking skin. The exact cause of this disorder remains unknown, however, there are indications that it is an inherited condition. Lesions occur in attacks of varying severity which may be triggered by (for example) stress, illness or damage to the skin. Treatments include soothing creams, exposure to light or drug therapy.
