Caption: Pancreatitis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan through the human upper abdomen, showing pancreatitis of the pancreas. This is a horizontal (axial) section of the abdomen viewed from below. The spinal column and vertebra are at centre bottom with the two kidneys (white) on either side. A lobe of the liver (green) is at far left. Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas (blue) usually due to alcohol abuse or gall stones. The symptoms are severe abdominal pain and often nausea and vomiting. The condition may also lead to diabetes mellitus or organ failure. CT scanning uses X-rays to produce "slice" images of the body.
