Caption: Psoriasis. View of the finger of a 69 year old man showing the nail damaged by psoriasis. The nail appears cracked, thickened and flaky. The affected area may become itchy, and can cause joint stiffness. During psoriasis, the nail grows faster and thicker than usual, and may become separated from its bed. Usually the skin is affected, with the most common sites being the elbows, forearms, scalp and the legs. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, although it is one of the commonest skin diseases. The disorder often runs in families and may be brought on by anxiety. There is no absolute cure known, although the condition can be relieved with corticosteroid drugs.
