The arrowed area (dark, lower right) shows degeneration in the substantia nigra in the basal ganglia of the brain. This part of the brain controls smooth muscle movement. In Parkinson's disease the nerve cells here die, reducing the amount of the neuro- transmitter dopamine produced. This causes tremor, jerky movements and a lack of coordination. The condition may be controlled by the use of drugs which increase dopamine production, but the disease cannot be cured.
