Caption: Parkinson's disease. Light micrograph of a section through a neuron (nerve cell, brown) containing a Lewy body (round, light brown). This abnormal deposit of a brain protein is a diagnostic feature of Parkinson's disease. This disease is a degeneration of nerve cells in the brain, causing muscle tremors, rigidity and incapacitation. The disease is progressive and, though medications can control symptoms, ultimately disabling. The tissue sample is from the substantia nigra, a part of the brain that aids movements. Magnification: x720 at 6x7cm size.
