Psoriasis skin cells, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Psoriasis is a disease in which the skin starts to produce new cells around ten times faster than is normal. The new cells form a thick, flaky layer on the skin, which may itch and cause pain. The causes of psoriasis are unknown. There is no cure, but symptoms can be relieved with skin softening creams (emollients) or, in severe cases, steroids. Magnification: x300 at 6x7cm size.
