Caption: Spleen with perisplenitis. This is a condition in which the outer lining of the spleen becomes inflamed, and here it has thickened considerably. Bands of pale fibrous tissue are also seen within the sectioned spleen. The condition may cause pain in the abdomen. The spleen is an organ of the lymphatic system. It is active in childhood, but it is not an essential organ in adults. It can be surgically removed if it becomes unhealthy.
