Caption: Polyarteritis nodosa. Light micrograph of a section through muscle from a patient suffering from polyarteritis nodosa. This disease, also known as Kussmaul's disease, causes weakening of the walls of arteries due to necrotizing inflammation (vasculitis). It is thought to be caused by a disturbance of the immune system, and is usually affects male adults with hepatitis B. It usually effects the kidneys and if diagnosed before symptoms become severe, can be treated with corticosteroid and immunosuppressant drugs. The prognosis is poor, however.
