Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Nasal polyp (dark brown) in one of the nostrils of the nose of a 50-year-old woman. A polyp is a benign growth that projects on a stalk from mucous membranes. A polyp usually forms in the intestine, nose, larynx or cervix. Nasal polyps are thought to be caused by the irritants in tobacco smoke, and are also often found in people with allergic rhinitis. They can cause an obstruction, chronic infection and discharge. Polyps are generally removed by surgical excision.
