Caption: Pneumonia. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a 39- year-old male diabetic patient with bacterial pneumonia (yellow) in the lower lobes of both lungs. People with diabetes are more susceptible to pneumonia than people without the condition. Bacterial or infectious pneumonia can be caused by various types of bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pathogen is inhaled into a lung segment or lobe. The alveoli (air sacs) become blocked with pus. Symptoms include fever, chest pain, coughing and blood in the sputum. Treatment is usually with antibiotics, although some bacteria are now resistant to many antibiotics.
