Caption: Vivitron. Computer visualisation of the intensity of the electrostatic field around an electrode of the Vivitron particle accelerator. The electrode is shown in cross-section (black). The electric field intensity is colour coded from red (maximum) through yellow, green and light blue to dark blue (minimum). The design of the electrode gives a very smooth field density, seen by the even light blue colour at top. A series of such electrodes surround the Vivitron accelerator, providing up to 35 MV (million volts) electrostatic potential for accelerating ions. Vivitron is at the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires, Strasbourg.
