Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Arachnophobia. Anxious face of a young woman peering into a web containing an orange spider. Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders. Seeing the feared animal usually triggers intense anxiety and sometimes a panic attack. Animal phobias, also known as zoophobias, typically start in childhood. Treatment is usually not required unless the feared animal is so common that it is not easily avoided. The most effective treatment is behaviour therapy to try to overcome this fear, sometimes combined with antidepressant drugs.
