Caption: Raynaud's syndrome: blue and white colouring of the fingers of this woman's hand due to spasm of blood vessels serving the hand. The subsequent restriction in blood supply is compounded by cold, by other diseases that adversely affect the circulation & by cigarette smoking. Symptoms include numbness, coldness & pallor of the fingers. In more severe cases the fingers are swollen, purple & tingle. A third & rare form of the disease results in localized gangrene.
