Caption: Raynaud's disease. Coloured X-ray of the forearms of a patient with Raynaud's disease showing calcification of the arteries in the forearm (blue). This is an advanced clinical manifestation of the disease, which causes the arteries to constrict thereby interrupting the blood flow to the fingers. Calcification such as this leads to permanent reduction of blood flow, which can result in the formation of ulcers or gangrene. Treatment includes keeping the hands and feet warm, stopping smoking, and using vasodilator drugs to dilate the blood vessels to allow blood to flow more freely.
