Caption: Shingles (caused by the virus herpes zoster) affecting an elderly man's upper torso. The disease usually starts with pain along the distribution of a nerve (often in the face, chest or abdomen) followed by the appearance of red vesicles. The vesicles subside after about 3 weeks, although severe pain may persist for many months in the area of the affected nerve.
