Caption: Shingles, an infection caused by Varicella-Zoster virus (a member of the Herpesvirus group), showing the appearance of the patient's arm on the second day of the rash. Shingles (also called zoster) is most commonly confined to adults. As well as a rash of vesicular blisters, its symptoms include fever and severe pain in the region of one or more nerve roots. Shingles is not transmissible as such, but close contacts (especially children) may develop the related infection, chickenpox.
