Caption: Schizophrenia brain. 3-D magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain of a schizophrenic patient showing structural changes. Compared to a normal brain, the hippocampus (yellow, at centre) is shrunken and the fluid-filled ventricles (white) enlarged. The hippocampus is part of the limbic system, involved with emotions & memory. Schizo- phrenia (split personality) is characterised by delusions, hallucinations and depression & tends to follow a deteriorating course. Antipsychotic drugs help suppress hallucinations and allow sufferers periods of respite. Compare with P332/160, brain scan of a normal subject.
