Caption: Shingles scars. View of an adult's buttock showing violet scarring after a recurrence of the herpes zoster (shingles) virus. Here, the area affected is the skin supplied by a spinal root nerve (dermatome). The area remains dormant for many years, the infection acquired through the child- hood illness of chickenpox. If the patient becomes stressed or immunosuppressed the herpes zoster virus dormant in the nerve is reactivated. Symptoms usually start as pain in the affected nerve, followed by the development of vesicles (shingles). Severe scarring and persistent nerve root pain are complications of the recurrence.
