Caption: Herpes zoster. A rash of red shingles blisters on a woman's abdomen. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by infection of nerves with the varicella- zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. This virus can remain dormant in the body for years af- ter an attack of chickenpox, and then become act- ive again if the body's immune system is weakened. The virus attacks nerves feeding the skin, causing an outbreak of small but very painful blisters in a well-defined area. Damage to nerves can result in the pain lasting for months or even years after the blisters have disappeared. There is no effect- ive cure for shingles, although antiviral drugs can reduce the severity of the disease.
