Caption: Sleeping sickness. Light micrograph of Trypanosoma gambiense, the cause of sleeping sickness, in the bloodstream. The T. gambiense organisms are the long thin curved cells (blue). The round cells are the red blood cells (grey). Sleeping sickness, or African trypanosomiasis, is a serious disease of tropical Africa. It is spread by the bites of the tsetse fly (Glossina sp.). The disease takes a slow course eventually spreading to the brain. This causes headaches, confusion and eventually severe tiredness. Unless the disease is treated coma and death will result. Magnification x1000 at 35mm size.
