Caption: Scabies. Artwork of a cross-section of skin infected by scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei, purple). Common sites of infection are marked by the green dots on the male figures. The female mites have burrowed into the layer of dead skin (pink/brown) at the top of the epidermis (pink) to lay their eggs (purple ovals). Scabies is very itchy and highly contagious during close physical contact. Treatment is with an insecticide lotion.
