Caption: Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Lesions on the lips and tongue of a patient with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), also called erythema multiforme major. SJS is a serious reaction of the immune system to drugs or viral infection. Lesions erupt on the skin and mucous membranes. These are treated as burns, with saline compresses for skin lesions and mouthwashes for oral lesions. Lost fluids must be replaced. Skin pain is treated with local anaesthetics. SJS requires hospital care, as severe cases of the gastrointestinal or respiratory membranes may be fatal.
