Caption: Septic shock. Artwork of a cutaway blood vessel during septic shock. This physiological condition occurs due to an overwhelming infection, especially septicaemia (blood poisoning). White blood cells (neutrophils, blue) arrive at the infection site to engulf the micro-organisms. Macrophages (green) release interleukin, which regulates the immune response. Widening of the blood vessel (vasodilation) results in increased capillary permeability and fluid leak (droplets), which may lead to a dramatic drop in blood pressure. Red blood cells are also seen.
