Caption: Pulmonary sarcoidosis. Frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with pulmonary sarcoidosis. Inflamed tissue is seen as white patches, left and right of centre. Sarcoidosis (Boeck's disease) is a rare, autoimmune disease of no known cause. It is characterised by chronic inflammation of tissue and the presence of multiple granulomas (nodular growths), which are similar to the tubercles formed in tuberculosis. Nearly all sarcoidosis affects the lungs, targeting the hilar (bronchopulmonary) lymph nodes. Although not always required, treatment involves the use of corticosteroid drugs to reduce inflammation.
