Caption: Nasal mucus in sinusitis. Rhinoscope view of mucus (white) inside the nose of a patient with severe sinusitis (the inflammation and infection of the sinuses). The paranasal sinuses are membrane-lined air-filled spaces in the bones of the face. They drain into the nose and throat. Severe colds can develop into an infection called sinusitis, where the sinuses fill with mucus and pus. This is superinfected chronic sinusitis, where a chronic (long-term) condition has been complicated by an overlying infection. It has resulted in mucopurulent flow (white) in the nasal passage, accompanied by nasal hydrorrhoea (severe runny nose).
