Caption: Image of the mouth of a patient ten days after tonsillectomy, the removal of the tonsils. Tonsils are found at the back of the throat and are a pair of oval tissue masses. They are made up of lymphoid tissue and form part of the lymphatic system which plays an important role in the body's defence against infections. Tonsillectomy was once a common childhood operation but it is now carried out only if a child suffers frequent and severe attacks of tonsillitis. Post-operative pain is common and may require analgesic drugs. Sore throat may persist for up two weeks after the operation and full recovery usually takes place within three weeks.
