Caption: Tuberculosis. Light micrograph of a section through human lung tissue affected with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). At centre left is a tubercle (red), an inflammatory lesion of diseased lung tissue. Air sacs of normal lung tissue can be seen at lower right. The tubercle has led to break down of lung air sacs, leaving dense tissue no longer functioning in the uptake of oxygen. The cause of tuberculosis is an infection by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing and fever. TB is an infectious disease which once was a major killer antibiotic drugs. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
