Caption: Throat after tonsillectomy. Close-up of the throat (pharynx) of a 20-year-old woman ten years after a tonsillectomy operation to remove the tonsils. The tonsils are a pair of oval masses of lymphoid tissue at the back of the mouth. They normally help protect the throat against infection but sometimes become a focus of infection themselves (tonsillitis). Tonsillectomy was once a common childhood remedy for this condition but is now only carried out if a child suffers frequent and severe attacks of tonsillitis. A scar left by the operation can be seen on the left in this woman's mouth.
