Caption: Tuberculosis. Coloured chest X-ray of human lungs showing evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis. The blue coloured heart can be seen at right, with the infected areas of the lungs at centre left & right (fluffy blue/white areas). Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium which, when inhaled into the lungs, forms a primary tubercle (nodular lesion). In many people their immune system stops the disease at this stage, but they remain carriers, transmitting the bacteria by coughing or sneezing. However if the disease spreads through the lymphatic system it can be fatal. Symptoms include fever, weight loss and coughing up blood.
