Caption: Athlete's foot fungal spores on a human nail, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is tinea unguium, the infection of a nail with ringworm (tinea). Ringworm is caused by several types of fungus, such as Trichophyton, Microsporum or Epidermophyton fungi. These spores are fungal reproductive structures that can lie dormant until the correct conditions reactivate them and renews the infection. Treatment involves keeping the infected area dry and using an anti-fungal powder. Magnification: x2250 at 6x7cm size.
