Caption: Brain tuberculosis. Coloured frontal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the head of a patient with tuberculosis (TB) infection of the brain. Tubercular lesions are seen as yellow spots (right and lower left). TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, which enter the body via the lungs. TB is usually a localised infection, but it may spread to other organs. Brain infection is dangerous as it may cause fatal meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain). Symptoms may include fever, headache, confusion, seizures and accumulation of fluid in the brain (hydrocephalus). Treatment is with antibiotics.
