Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Athlete's foot infection. Heel of a 52-year-old woman with the fungal infection athlete's foot (tinea pedis). This skin infection is caused by various species of ringworm (Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton). It is a highly contagious skin condition, spread by direct contact or infected material, and causes cracked and inflamed skin. Athlete's foot is treated with antifungal creams or dusting powders. Secondary infections by bacteria in the exposed skin are common, and need further treatment with antibiotics.
