Caption: Ringworm infection on a man's forehead. Ringworm (tinea) is a disease caused by a fungal infection of the skin. It can be caused by various fungi, including Microsporum and Trichophyton. The red patches cause severe itching. The disease is highly contagious, and can be spread by direct contact or by contact with contaminated material. It is most common on the feet, where it is known as athlete's foot (tinea pedis). Treatment is with antifungal drugs.
