Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Mouth abscess. Close-up of the inside of the mouth of a 15-year-old girl with an abscess on the area near her tonsils. The fleshy object seen hanging down from the roof of the throat is called the uvula. The abscess is the white area at right of the uvula. The tonsils, the lumps in the wall of the throat, are seen each side of the uvula. An abscess is usually due to infection, and this type of abscess is a common complication of tonsillitis (the infection of the tonsils). The bacteria that cause the infection are normally the Streptococcus bacteria. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. If the abscess recurs, the tonsils may be removed. If swelling occurs, the abscess is drained.
