Caption: Thyroidectomy. Scintigram of a single lobe of a thyroid gland following the surgical removal of the second lobe (partial thyroidectomy). The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. A thyroidectomy may be necessary to remove goitres (enlarged lobes) or tumours, or when increased thyroid activity (hyperthyroidism) does not respond to drugs. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-123, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland.
