Caption: Thyroiditis (De Quervain's thyroiditis). Scintigram of an enlarged thyroid gland, caused by a viral infection of the gland. The condition is known as De Quervain's thyroiditis. The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. When De Quervain's thyroiditis occurs, the gland swells rapidly and becomes painful. The thyroid gland becomes overactive (hyperthyroidism) and underactive (hypothyroidism) before normal function returns. Treatment involves bed rest and paracetamol to reduce inflammation. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-131, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland.
