Caption: Cerebral toxoplasmosis. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through brain tissue infected with the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Trophozites, the replicating form of the parasite (oval), are within a cyst (centre) in the tissue. T. gondii infects nervous and muscle tissue. It rarely leads to disease in the healthy, but causes toxoplasmosis in individuals with a suppressed immune system. It is contracted via contact with infected cat faeces or raw meat. Treatment is with antibiotics.
